The story of CFMOTO is that of a Chinese company that has grown, over just a few decades, from a small engine manufacturer into a major player in the global motorcycle and recreational vehicle market.
For my part, I discovered the brand two years ago during a series of test rides, and I have since become a proud ambassador. You might say I’m not objective, but I would argue that, given the number of motorcycles I test each year, I’m actually in a great position to judge a product’s quality. And CFMOTO—with its complete lineup, undeniable service, and build quality—has not disappointed me so far!
That’s why I wanted to write an article about the brand, its origins, and also demystify its arrival on the Canadian motorcycle market.
The Beginnings (1989)
CFMOTO was founded in 1989 in Hangzhou, China, by Lai Guoqiang. Initially known as Zhejiang Chunfeng Power Co., Ltd., the company focused mainly on manufacturing engines and mechanical components. At the time, the company was still small, but it quickly stood out for its ability to develop its own technologies rather than simply copying those of other manufacturers.
Entering the Recreational Vehicle Market
In the 1990s and early 2000s, CFMOTO began producing ATVs and engines for various types of vehicles. The company also developed its first side-by-side vehicles, a market that was experiencing strong growth in North America and Europe.
During this period, the company invested heavily in research and development, allowing it to quickly improve product quality and begin exporting to multiple countries.
Entering the Motorcycle World
In the early 2010s, CFMOTO made a serious move into the street motorcycle market. The brand launched several mid-displacement models that attracted attention thanks to their strong value for money and modern equipment.
Motorcycles like the 650NK, 650MT, and 650GT began appearing in European and North American markets. Gradually, the brand’s perception evolved: CFMOTO was no longer seen only as a budget manufacturer, but as a builder capable of offering well-designed and reliable motorcycles.
The Partnership With KTM

A key moment in the company’s history came in 2013, when CFMOTO signed a strategic partnership with KTM. This collaboration allowed CFMOTO to manufacture certain KTM engines and models in China for the Asian market.
The partnership went even further when both companies co-developed several motorcycles based on the 790 platform, leading to models such as the CFMOTO 800MT.

This alliance greatly helped CFMOTO improve its technology, build quality, and international credibility.
CFMOTO: Arrival in Canada
CFMOTO did not initially establish itself directly as a brand here; its presence dates back to the 2000s through a passionate distributor. In 2006, Canada Motor Imports Inc. (better known as CMI) earned CFMOTO’s trust. They began importing and distributing the brand’s products in Canada, starting with ATVs, quads, and recreational vehicles.
Driven by their passion for motorized vehicles, the Quebec-based duo Carl Patoine and Hélène Binet began building CFMOTO’s presence through a growing dealer network. Today, there are more than 50 dealerships across Canada, with continued expansion.
The motorcycle side of CFMOTO Canada is more recent. After years of importing ATVs and utility vehicles, CMI announced in late 2021 that it had become the official distributor of CFMOTO motorcycles in Canada. The first motorcycle deliveries to dealers were scheduled for spring 2022.
This means that while ATVs and side-by-sides had been present longer, CFMOTO motorcycles only truly entered the Canadian market starting in 2022.
In Canada, CFMOTO does not operate directly: CMI handles importation, distribution, and support for CFMOTO products (ATVs, side-by-sides, motorcycles, accessories, etc.) through a network of authorized dealers.
The headquarters of this operation is located in Saint-Benoît-Labre, Quebec, where CMI has been established since 2007.
Global Expansion
Today, CFMOTO sells its products in more than 100 countries and has strong distribution networks in Europe, North America, and Australia. The company produces a wide range of vehicles:
- street motorcycles;
- adventure motorcycles;
- ATVs (all-terrain vehicles);
- side-by-side vehicles;
- engines and mechanical components.
In the adventure segment, models like the CFMOTO IBEX 800 and CFMOTO IBEX 450 have helped raise the brand’s profile among touring riders.
A Brand in Full Evolution
Today, CFMOTO is investing heavily in design, technology, and innovation. The company even operates design studios in Europe and collaborates with international engineers and designers.
In just over 30 years, the company has evolved from a small engine manufacturer into a recognized player in the global powersports industry. Given the speed at which the brand is evolving, it is clear that CFMOTO intends to keep gaining ground in the motorcycle world.
The 2026–2027 CFMOTO motorcycle lineup clearly demonstrates the brand’s rapid evolution. In just a few years, the manufacturer has moved from offering a few affordable models to a complete lineup covering nearly every segment: sport, adventure, naked, and cruiser. The goal is simple: offer modern, well-equipped motorcycles at more accessible prices than many Japanese or European competitors.
Here is an overview of the main motorcycle families currently offered and those on the way.
Sports Motorcycles (SS / SR)
In the sports motorcycle segment, CFMOTO targets performance enthusiasts and younger riders.
Among the popular models is the CFMOTO 450SS. This mid-displacement sports bike, powered by a 449 cc parallel-twin engine, produces around 51 hp. It also features a slipper clutch, Bosch ABS, and a modern TFT display.
The CFMOTO 675SS, equipped with a 675 cc three-cylinder engine, is another flagship model of the new generation. It sits between smaller sports bikes and more powerful supersports machines.
Looking ahead, the brand is even working on a high-performance V4 superbike, inspired by racing, which could arrive around 2027.

Naked Motorcycles (NK Series)

The NK series has become one of CFMOTO’s most important lineups. These are unparalleled sports motorcycles, very popular for road and urban riding. The range includes several models.
CFMOTO Naked Street Motorcycles
- 450NK: more powerful and highly accessible
- 675NK: new model with a three-cylinder engine producing around 95 hp
- 800NK: the most powerful model in the lineup with around 100 hp and several electronic aids
These motorcycles often feature modern equipment such as riding modes, cruise control, a connected TFT display, and sometimes a quick shifter.
Adventure Motorcycles (MT / IBEX)

CFMOTO is investing heavily in the adventure segment, one of the most popular worldwide.
CFMOTO Adventure Touring Motorcycles
- IBEX 450: lightweight adventure bike, very popular among new travellers.
- 800 Explore: mid-displacement adventure bike with a KTM-derived engine.
- 1000MT-X: a new high-end adventure motorcycle with around 113 hp, KYB suspension, Brembo brakes, and several electronic aids (not available in Canada).
This lineup is crucial to the brand’s identity, as the popularity of adventure motorcycles continues to grow across markets.
Cruiser and Retro-Style Motorcycles

CFMOTO also offers classic-style motorcycles and cruisers. The main representative is the 450CL-C, which uses the 449 cc engine from the 450 series but features a relaxed riding position, belt drive, and retro-inspired styling.
Small Motorcycles and Minibikes

To attract new riders, the brand also offers highly accessible models.
A fun example is the CFMOTO Papio SS, a small 126 cc sports bike that is lightweight and easy to ride. It is often used as a learning bike or a second motorcycle for fun.

3. CFMOTO IBEX 450

In the adventure motorcycle world, the IBEX 450 has become a reference for riders who want to explore without committing to a large, heavy bike.

The 2026–2027 CFMOTO lineup covers nearly every segment of the modern motorcycle market: sport, naked, adventure, cruisers, and even electric. The brand’s strategy is to offer well-equipped motorcycles, modern engines, and competitive pricing, which explains its rapidly growing popularity across multiple markets.
